Summer in the Tri-Valley means one thing on my calendar every year: the Alameda County Fair. I made it out last week, and between a painting quote in the Hobby exhibit and a last minute concert invitation, I walked away with a story worth sharing.
Wandering Through the Hobby Exhibit
The Hobby exhibit is always my first stop. I love seeing what people create in their spare time, from quilts to woodworking to model trains. This year, a tribute to Bob Ross caught my eye. Right there on the display was his famous line, "We don't make mistakes, just happy accidents." I stood in front of it longer than I meant to, because it's the kind of quote that sticks with you well beyond the art world.
When a Last Minute Yes Turns Into the Best Part of Your Week
The fair's concert lineup is one of my favorite reasons to go every year. The acts they bring in are genuinely impressive, and the ticket prices make it an easy yes. This year, I got a last minute invitation to see En Vogue. It wasn't something I had planned on, and I almost passed. I'm glad I didn't. The show was full of energy from the first song to the last, and it turned into one of the best surprises of my summer.
Looking back, it felt like the fair's version of its own happy accident. A quote I wasn't expecting to move me, followed by a concert I wasn't expecting to attend, both ending up as highlights of my week.
What This Fair Tells Me About Living Here
This is what I love most about the Tri-Valley. We get this rare mix of small town warmth and genuine surprise, whether that shows up in a hobby display that stops you mid step or a concert you almost skipped. It is part of what makes Livermore, Pleasanton, Dublin, and San Ramon feel like home rather than just a spot on the map.
If you have not made it to the fair yet this season, go. Walk through the exhibits, check the concert schedule, and stay open to your own happy accidents. You never know what you will walk away with.
